Kenyan Church Leaders Oppose Constitutional Change Over Abortion

Church leaders in Kenya are opposing constitutional amendments to Kenya's constitution over changes to abortion laws. American groups, both pro - life and pro - choice are also trying to influence the outcome in Kenya. This topic is hotly debated between Christian pro-lifers and pro-choice believers. Both sides are fundamentally set in their views.

The current law is Kenya only allows for abortions in circumastances where the women's life is in danger. Hundreds of thousands of women each year in Kenya seek abortions even though it is illegal. Doctors can only perform an abortion if the woman's life is threatened.

Christian groups fear that changes in the law will allow broad interpretation of the 'life - threatenting' condition for the mother. This could lead to abortion on demand according to the American Center for Law and Justice, one of the organizations involved with the Kenyan legal changes. The Kenyan government will be putting constitutional changes to a referendum later this year.

The pro - choice group, Center for Reproductive Rights, based in New York appealed to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and asked her to call on Kenya to pass the reforms. This group says that at least 2,600 women each year in Kenya die from abortions. They believe legalized abortion would allow for better medical conditions under which abortions can be performed.

The majority of Kenyan's are Christians and Church leaders are urging them not to support the new laws as currently drafted. Peter Karanja of the National Council of Churches of Kenya, which is the main umbrella for the Protestant Church in Kenya, says that the Church will not support the current draft of the reforms.
