If you're like me then you may be wasting hours trying to figure out how come all your old xbox games won't work on your brand new xbox 360. I was very excited when I purchased my Xbox 360 and brought it home to play games. Unfortunately, games are very expensive and I could only afford to buy 2 games. The games which I bought were Halo 3, my main reason for getting an xbox 360, and Fantastic 4. My Xbox 360 bundle came with the games Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Forza Racing.

In total, I now have only 4 Xbox 360 games. What I really wanted to do was play all my old xbox games on the new console. I already had a library of over 20 old xbox games. One of the main reasons, besides Halo 3, for purchasing the 360 was so I could continue to play my old xbox games. Imagine my disappointment when I tried playing about half-a-dozen of my old games only to find that none of them worked! I was quite upset to say the least.

Then I went to my local retailer and tried to find out why my games didn't work. The store clerk provided some information, but nothing that really helped me directly.

Then I went on the Internet to get some information, after all, that's why the Internet was created ( besides for porn ). What I learned was how to successfully make the 360 play most old xbox games. The 360 still is not compatible with all old games. From my experience, about two-thirds of my old games work on the new console.

You have three choices on how to update your new Xbox 360 to play old games. Please note that your xbox 360 needs a harddrive in order to play old games.

Your choices are:

  1. Use an ethernet cable to hook-up your xbox to the internet. Place your old game inside the unit and your xbox will automatically connect to the microsoft xbox site to download an update which will let you play that old game.
  2. Download an xbox update and burn a cd or dvd to place in your xbox 360 tray. You can dowload the file here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardscompatibility.htm
  3. Order an xbox update cd patch from microsoft. However, the official xbox site says that this disk is not yet available for order. So in effect, you may only have 2 choices.

The method which I elected to use was option 2. I burned my own cd-rom with the xbox patch, put it in my xbox 360 and fired it up. The xbox prompted me to install new patch. The process was very easy.

What I can't understand is why they don't include this patch cd-rom with every xbox 360 unit that they sell. Why make everyone go through so much trouble?
